Saurath Sabha, An Epitome of Traditional Marriage

In continuation with my last blog post on “Saurath Sabha” on 12 August 2012, I am back on my blogging platform with some new information about “Saurath Sabha“.

Due to the passive behavior of the government towards the promotion of tourism and preservation of historical antiques and places of a century-long civilization, I need your concern about the promotion and preservation of these things. I have been to this place, a few months before my visit to Saurath. But I was unaware of Saurath Sabha during my first blog post about it and it was only a matter taken directly from the article of Times of India (Crest Edition). Now, I can give you the exact picture and condition of the place. I will not repeat even a single point from the last blog post as my ultimate aim of blogging is to give you more & more information. I am going to tell you an interesting story or most of us can say an interesting fact as I don’t want to be a part of the superstitious argument and don’t want to hurt anyone’s sentiment.

The story is that – there was a tree, after the marriage of 100 couples, all the leaves of that tree would fall on the ground, or on the other side this was the indication for people that 100 marriage agreements had made under this tree. On the opposite side of the campus of Saurath Sabha, there is a Dak-Bungalow which is in the abandoned state due to the disinterested government, and the trees around it are illegally being cut by the villagers. The place is so beautiful that you would like to stay for a few days there. There was a time it was known as Sabha Gachhi due to the number of trees, presently it is also recognized as Sabha Gachhi but trees are disappearing. There is a beautiful arrangement for marriage event-in case of rain or critical environmental conditions, there are two houses for the execution of the event. Generally, it is executed in open ground under the banyan tree. There is a temple of Lord Shiva near the Sabha Gachhi.

There was a ritual to go to the temple after the execution of marriage formalities. There is a large Pond ( more than 1 bigha) and a deep Well having a large diameter. There was a time when the elephant of the king of Darbhanga fell into that well and could be taken out after a day-long attempt. After that people had made a boundary wall around the Well. Besides the Well and Pond, there is a house for panjikaars or panjiyaars whatever people say, where people go to match the Janm-Kundli to avoid any match with the same Gotras, Kulas and to avoid the problems of mismatch.

There is a library named “Vidyapati Library” in Saurath Sabha campus. Along with that, there is “Culture and Art Center” by Mr. Jha. I can’t recall his name and in front of the Sabha Gachhi, there is an idol of Vidyapati jee, the famous poet of Mithilanchal. But I felt very sad after observing and seeing the poor condition of Sabha Gachhi, which is now only a place for bulls and buffaloes. The place is environmentally pure and the roads are good. I hope and expect some of us would be able to go forward in the direction of the preservation of these places and would be able to bring the attention of the government towards it. As I don’t think that the government will do in this direction after the famous “Nargona Palace” of Darbhanga was sold by the government for some hotel purpose. It only shows that the government is not willing to do anything in this respect or in this particular area. I Will soon come with another blogpost.
