The Great Sanskrit Scholar Kalidasa and his relation with Mithila

After a long time today, I am writing about the great scholar of Sanskrit “Kalidasa” and his relation with Mithila. It was the time when Vidyotma, Kalidasa’s wife left him after knowing the reality. Actually Kalidasa was a fool before the incident that I will tell you later. He was a fool who was cutting the branch of the tree on which he was sitting.

And Vidyotma was a scholar, she had defeated so many Sanskrit scholars. So to take revenge all that scholars decided to make a planning to defeat her by a fool and Kalidasa was fit for that. They told her that he (Kalidasa) was dumb and by their strategy they defeated Vidyotma through Kalidasa.

Vidyotama had announced that he would marry the person who would defeat her. And thus she married Kalidasa. One day when she heard the sound of the camel, she asked him “ustram wadati?” and he told, “what the hell you are talking?” This reveals the identity of Kalidasa and she told him to leave her house and he left her and was moving hither and thither and got a job of cook in the ashrama.

One day there was a wild wind and no one from the students’ side dare to go to the temple of “Uchhaith” for the regular prayer or worship. They told Kalidasa to go to that temple for worship in the evening time. He went there and because of the darkness, he couldn’t see the “kumkum” and be going to apply the charcoal on the face of the goddess.

It is being said that the goddess holds his hand to stop him and asked him for his desired thing. And he told that he wanted to become a Scholar and the goddess told him that the books you see will be gone to your mind permanently. Whatever the reason was for the Kalidasa being a scholar, now a no. of books by Kalidasa we can see like “Abhigyanshakuntalam”, “meghdootam” etc.
